Why a large share of First-Time DMV Test Takers Fail (And How to Beat the Computer)

State DMV computer terminals pull randomized questions from a pool of 300+ statutory items. Most applicants fail because they rely on “common sense” instead of memorizing exact statutory numbers: 100 feet for turn signals (CA/FL/NY), 200 feet for merging into a bike lane before turning right (CA CVC §21717), 15 feet for fire hydrants, 500 feet for dimming high beams for oncoming traffic, and 20 mph below the speed limit when unable to move over for emergency vehicles.

The 8 MUTCD Road Sign Shapes & Colors Cheat Sheet

(2) Vehicles turning left must always yield to oncoming vehicles going straight or turning right. (3) At a T-intersection without signs, traffic on the terminating street must yield to all vehicles on the continuing cross street.

When Must Oncoming Traffic Stop for a School Bus? (50-State Comparison)

Across almost the entire United States, all traffic in BOTH directions must stop when a school bus activates its flashing red lights and stop arm—even on a 4-lane highway with a painted center turn lane. Oncoming traffic may proceed ONLY when separated by a physical median barrier or unpaved space (such as Florida’s 5-foot unpaved median rule). Note: in New York State, the law is even stricter and requires stopping on divided highways as well!

The “Up, Up & Away” Trick for Hill Parking Questions

Never guess on a hill parking question again. Only ONE scenario requires turning your front wheels to the LEFT (away from the edge of the road): parking UPHILL WITH A CURB (“Up, Up, and Away”). In every other case—downhill with a curb, uphill without a curb, or downhill without a curb—turn your front wheels to the RIGHT (toward the curb or shoulder).
